How to Rock a Peplum Jacket

The Oxford dictionary definition of a peplum is ‘A short gathered or pleated strip of fabric attached at the waist of a woman’s jacket, dress, or blouse to create a hanging frill or flounce’.
It originates from the Greek word for tunic which is Peplos. The particular reference for the modern day take on the peplum though refers to an ‘overskirt’ that was worn over jackets.
Whatever the case, this modern addition to tops, dresses, skirts and jackets is flattering to all shapes and sizes.
The beauty and perhaps success of the peplum tops and dresses and so on is that the peplum shape accentuates the waist and gives the figure a more curvaceous, feminine look.

The Dashiki Outfit Every Guy is Rocking

Dashiki, also known as “Danchiki” by the Hausas, pronounced dan-she-key is a loose-fitting shirt or tailored shirt, (often V-shaped) often with elaborate or simple embroidery patterns around the neck, chest, and sleeve lines. The shapes of the neckline may also vary. Some Dashikis come with closed necklines, some V-neck lines, square-neck lines, and many other shapes and forms. Dashikis are widely worn in West Africa. However, over the years it has gained popularity in other parts of Africa.

Dashikis come in different patterns and designs. However, the basic look is preserved. Dashikis may include a few traditional buttons, a clip button, Velcro, or a hook and eye closure to secure the neckline.

Agbada for the Modern Men

Growing up, the traditional attire known as agbada was mostly worn by "big men". At occassions in those days, you see men arriving the venue, flinging the garment over their shoulders and walking majestically. It was almost always certain that these men would be "spraying" a lot of naira notes in that occasion. Yes, that was the impression that an agbada wearing man gave off.
Agbada was very rarely worn by young men in the past. I seriously doubt any young man, ten years ago, would have willingly worn agbada just for the sake of being stylish....correct me if i'm wrong.

Fast forward to the present, agbada is no longer just for the big daddies, we now see young men (and even women) rocking the agbada in a modernized fashion; where the old school agbada is worn over long sleeved buba (tunic), these days, they are worn over short sleeved buba. Where the old school agbada is long, extremely broad and wing-like, these days they come in shorter lengths and widths and are definitely not as heavy as the old school type.
